Longboat Key Real Estate Information

Longboat Key is a relatively small resort and vacation community found in the southwestern portion of the Sunshine State. Longboat Key is found bordering the Gulf of Mexico, and is considered a part of the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area. Longboat Key has a population of about seven thousand six hundred residents, and is split between Manatee County and Sarasota County. Longboat Key has a total size of almost exactly seventeen square miles, a figure divided between just over twelve square miles of water and a little less than five square miles of land. This gives Longboat Key a population density of about four hundred and fifty people per square mile, about average for an island resort community.

Longboat Key is currently governed by Town Commissioner Gene Jaleski, although the Federation of Longboat Key Condominiums and the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce also hold considerable sway over the region. The area which is now considered Longboat Key was originally inhabited by Timucuan and Caloosa Native Americans well before the arrival of any European explorers. Hernando DeSoto was the first non-Indian to explore Longboat Key, most likely in the year fifteen thirty nine. Permanent American settlement began three and a half centuries later, when the Mann family made their home on the island. Longboat Key was officially incorporated as a town in the year nineteen fifty five, and grew more quickly during the next two decades. There are a total of seven historic markers in the town of Longboat, each commemorating an important chapter in the community's history.

The educational needs of Longboat Key are met by a number of primary, secondary, and postsecondary institutions both in the locale and the region surrounding the town. Some of these schools include Booker High School, Bayshore High School, the Ringling School of Art and Design, the Sarasota Military Academy, Sarasota High School, and Bayshore Elementary School.
